A wakeup call to all Dictators no matter how big or small. Whether you opress those in your household or your majid or country. However, we need to ensure that what replaces these opressors is not the same or worse than what currently exists.

Marginalizing those weaker than you

December 7th, 2010 | by Omar

It is said that the feminist movement within Islam was brought on by the effects of colonial rule. Men who where once powerful and respected were being marginalized and humiliated by their colonial occupiers. To reassert what power/influence they had left, they in turn marginalized the only people they still had power over...their womenfolk (wives, sisters and daughters). We as an ummah (community) were once a known for our undeniable desire to be just to all those around us fore we were reminded by Allah Himself that He does not love oppressors. Our religion was founded by those who were oppressed. The first to accept the prophesy of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were the poor, destitute and oppressed. They were humiliated by their oppressors at every opportunity. However, when the tide changed and Allah decreed that it was the Muslim's time to rule, our noble Prophet (peace be upon him) showed the utmost mercy to all those who oppressed him and his followers.

Getting My Air Canada Hate On

November 11th, 2010 | by Omar

So I was heading to a mobile health conference (mHealth Summit) this past Sunday being hosted in Washington DC. Sunday morning I was informed that my passport was going to expire two days into my five day trip. I called the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and asked if it would be possible for me to get back into Canada without a valid passport. They stated that as long as I have my birth certificate with me it would be no problem. However, they informed me that getting into the USA might be an issue because they require everyone to have a valid passport for the duration of their stay in the US. So I went and talked to the US Customs officials at the airport. After half-an-hour they granted me an exception that would allow me to stay in the US with an expired passport. I got on my United Airlines flight without issue.

Raising a child isn’t easy especially…

Raising a child isn't easy for anyone but especially those with disabilities. I saw a blind couple taking their son to school. I can't imagine how the were able to take the baby home and take care of him. I have a hard time changing a diaper and I can see...I can't imagine being able to do so without being able to see.

The Road to Shahada Takes Different Routes

August 23rd, 2010 | by Omar

When the Prophet (pbuh) was given the message of Islam, Allah made it clear to him (pbuh) that his purpose was to deliver the message and that whether people accepted the message was not in his blessed hands. That in fact, Allah (swt) through his infinite knowledge was the only one who knew who would accept the message and who would not. It has always fascinated me to know and learn how people not born into a "Muslim family" come to become Muslim.
